It may look like a shower in the living room, but it's actually a greenhouse

Baffling glass box middle of Townsville rental Domain
What is it? The glass box in the Kirwan rental is not what you may think.

A $445-per-week house which has been rented out in Queensland features a surprise addition in the living room.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 72 Colchester Crescent in Kirwan contains a glass tall box in the main communal space that looks just like a shower.

Agent Kaye Matheson of McGrath Townsville - who has leased the address after a campaign of solid interest - told Nine at the time the property launched on the market that she commonly got questions concerning the box and its purpose.

The glass box is actually a greenhouse - a structure used to grow plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables. The glass allows maximum exposure to sunlight. This one has a skylight above.

The greenhouse is right in the middle of the main living space, just metres away from the galley-style kitchen.

Greenhouses or glasshouses, as well as shade houses and vertical gardens, are a highly-desired feature, especially in modern apartment living where space is limited. They are increasingly seen as a smart inclusion.

The greenhouse in the residential property was "ahead of its time", the agent said.

At the time listing went live, Matheson told Nine the 1995-built house was "ahead of its time" with the inclusion of the greenhouse.

Interiors take on a neutral colour palette with white tiled floors, grey cabinetry, white brick walls and beige drapes.

The main living area leads to an outdoor entertaining zone with manicured lawns.

Matheson told Nine there was "strong interest" in the home due to its close proximity to schools.

Kirwan is a residential suburb of Townsville, 11km south west of the city centre.
