The charming and historic 1 Alfred Square in St Kilda.

As towers sprout, heralding a new era, a 168-year-old house has held its ground on Melbourne's iconic waterfront.

A fresh bid to sell the landmark 1 Alfred Square, St Kilda, is underway. The hold-out house, untouched and magnificently preserved as the suburb has modernised around it, is a handsome reminder of old Melbourne.

Encompassed by apartment towers, the terrace, built in 1855, is one of only two standalone properties facing a significant beachfront square in St Kilda.

It is one of the last chances to live in a freestanding house this close to one of Australia's best-known and vibrant waterfronts, and is newly relisted by Marshall White's Ben Manolitsas, Oliver Bruce and Lachlan Dennehy.

Alfred Square is well known in the bayside for its jaw-dropping position, and when standing on the handsome iron-lace verandah, the new owner can watch music lovers stream into the Palais Theatre and boats bobbing on the bay.

Marshall White is entering November on the back of a so-called Super October. The agency, which handles listings across 72 suburbs, including Melbourne's bayside, inner east, and the holiday playground of the Mornington Peninsula, had more than $500 million worth of properties in those areas prepped to go under the hammer in October.

The influx will have sated starved buyers who have been picking through a low level of homes for sale this year, market wide.
