Gold Coast mansion from The Rock disaster movie looms large on the prestige market

Property real estate Domain listing house property pool designer luxury mansion Gold Coast
The multimillion-dollar Broadbeach Waters beauty - for sale through Ray White - was featured in Dwayne Johnson's 2015 flick San Andreas.

One of the biggest houses on the Gold Coast, which starred in scenes from a Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson blockbuster film, looms large on the Queensland prestige market.

Named Te Moana, the "tropical trophy home" at 249-255 Monaco Street in Broadbeach Waters is where part of the flick San Andreas was filmed and has been listed for sale, via expressions of interest.

Principal photography for the 2015 disaster movie, starring The Rock, Sin City's Carla Gugino and The White Lotus' Alexandra Daddario, spanned two months in Queensland.

The vendors, Malcolm Watkins (founder of Australian Finance Group) and his husband Peter Kerr, who is an award-winning interior designer (of PLK DESIGN), bought Te Moana in July 2020 and describe the epic property as irresistible.

They have an eye for prestige property, previously living in a Toorak home that was the highest on-market deal of 2020 in Victoria. They are selling to downsize.

"Moving from Melbourne was a huge decision after spending nearly three years completing our Toorak home, but we couldn't resist this resort of a property," Watkins says.

The couple will split their time between the Gold Coast and Airlie Beach when the sale is completed.

The glamour mansion, on the books of Ray White Burleigh Group's Rebecca Moffrey, is celebrated in the listing as a "Caribbean and Mediterranean-inspired landmark estate, hosting Hollywood A-listers and blockbuster movies".

At the start of San Andreas, the property's poolside terraces, circular driveway, soaring entry and river-view living room feature as his daughter and ex-wife's luxury home.

San Andreas co-stars Dwyane and Kylie posed for a few red carpet snaps...
Dwayne Johnson and Kylie Minogue appeared in San Andreas, filmed around southeast Queensland.

In the flick, The Rock fights to save his family when an enormous earthquake rips apart California. Gatton in the Lockyer Valley, 90km west of Brisbane, was a substitute for California in the movie, with other scenes taking place around southeast Queensland, including on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane.

Pop princess Kylie Minogue made a cameo in the movie as a woman who tumbles out of a skyscaper when the earthquake strikes.

Te Moana has a 17-metre swimming pool in curated gardens, a riverfront terrace, undercover terrace with fireplace beside a water feature and pond, double-height foyer, pool room and wine cellar, gym and multiple outdoor zones to catch the Gold Coast breeze, including a "drying court" next to the laundry.

The water frontage of the block is a sweeping 42 metres, facing prestigious Main River at the rear, and the estate includes a deep-water pontoon for boating.

Surfers Paradise is ten minutes from the front door.

The almost 4000-square-metre block is the second largest holding on the street, the listing advises, where more than 20 properties have traded for upwards of $5 million and the best-of-the-best have achieved eight-figure results.

This includes Te Moana, which last sold for $12.5 million in 2020, public records show.

"Te Moana is without doubt, one of the Coast's most extravagant homes - with a Hollywood history to boot," Moffrey says.

"San Andreas was one of the year's most popular films in 2015 and there are some very distinct scenes with The Rock on the driveway and in the living room.

"Action stars don't get much bigger than Dwayne Johnson, so to say he's been there, is quite the conversation starter. "And that's before you even start to take in the spectacular views over the water."

Expressions of interest for the property close at 5pm on September 15.
